Meet Claudia Lpez, the first woman to lead Colombia’s capital

(CNN)A gay woman has taken control of the biggest city in Colombia, and she’s isn’t bothering to hide in the closet from the country’s conservative, mostly Catholic voters, either. López was raised by her mother in the working-class neighborhoods of Colombia’s sprawling capital, with five younger siblings. She worked as a housekeeper while getting her Masters in Public Administration and Urban Policy from Columbia University in New York and later earned a PhD in Political Science from Northwestern University. Lopez first entered politics in 1989, during the mass student movement that followed the assassination of Colombian President Luis Carlos Galán. One of the most significant groups she was involved in became known as the ‘Seventh Ballot’ movement, credited for successfully …

US and Canada have lost 2.9 billion birds since 1970, study says

(CNN)Bird populations in the United States and Canada have dropped by 29% since 1970, signifying 2.9 billion birds lost in almost 50 years, according to a new study. The study was published Thursday in the journal Science. “Multiple, independent lines of evidence show a massive reduction in the abundance of birds,” said Ken Rosenberg, the study’s lead author and a senior scientist at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and American Bird Conservancy. “We expected to see continuing declines of threatened species. But for the first time, the results also showed pervasive losses among common birds across all habitats, including backyard birds.” Almost 90% of the birds lost came from 12 common songbird families like sparrow, blackbirds, warblers, finches and swallows. …

Hubble snaps new portrait of Saturn

(CNN)When Saturn was approaching closest to Earth this year on June 20, the Hubble Space Telescope captured the view. And the hexagon is larger than it looks — four Earths could fit inside it. But Saturn’s appearance varies. Some features come and go, like a large storm by the north pole spotted by Hubble last year. This year, it’s nowhere to be seen. But a super “thunderhead,” as astronomers call them, is visible in the center of Saturn. Just like Earth, Saturn goes through its seasons as well. Hubble spotted Saturn during its summer. The planet’s vivid amber color is due to a smog-like haze occurring during its summer where solar ultraviolet radiation creates reactions in the atmosphere. And much …
