The reason Mark Zuckerberg’s comments are laughable

(CNN)In the course of Mark Zuckerberg’s back and forth with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez last week, the New York congresswoman asked him: “So you won’t take down lies or you will take down lies? I think that’s just a pretty simple yes or no?” Zuckerberg refused the bait contained in the word “lies” and responded, “people should be able to see for themselves what politicians that they may or may not vote for are saying.” Behind this strategy lie two oft quoted statements by Justice Louis Brandeis: “sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants” and “the remedy for harmful speech is more speech, not enforced silence.” And behind these two free speech platitudes is the assumption that when bad or …

Previous CDC reports have charted meth’s increasing toll, noting that it rose from eighth to fourth in just four years. Most of the meth in the U.S. is made in Mexico and smuggled across …

Senators Hammer Boeing CEO For Crashes: I’d Walk Before Getting On A 737 Max

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg on the failures of his company’s best-selling plane, the 737 Max. Tuesday hearing before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, Muilenburg offered an apology to the families of the victims of two deadly crashes, including the 157 people who were aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed in March. The mea culpa did little to lessen senators’ scrutiny of the company, as they went on to question Muilenburg for nearly three hours over safety certifications and whether there was sufficient Federal Aviation Administration oversight of pilot training and the Max, which has been grounded worldwide. “Can you see that this raises much concern about the level of coziness between Boeing personnel and FAA regulators?” Wicker …

Mountain Gorilla Numbers Get Much-Needed Boost Thanks To Extreme Conservation Efforts

Biologist Jean Paul Hirwa notes her meal on his tablet computer as he peers out from behind a nearby stand of stinging nettles. “I’m here,” Hirwa is trying to say. “It’s OK. No reason to worry.” Yet Fossey herself, who died in 1985, would likely be surprised any mountain gorillas are left to study. Alarmed by rising rates of poaching and deforestation in central Africa, she predicted the species could go extinct by 2000. ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE – In this Friday, Sept. 4, 2015 file photo, a male silverback mountain gorilla from the family of mountain gorillas named Amahoro, which means “peace” in the Rwandan language, sits in the dense forest on the slopes of Mount Bisoke volcano in Volcanoes …

Hundreds of Chicago’s student athletes are missing out on playoff season as the teachers’ strike drags on

(CNN)The nearly weeklong Chicago teachers’ strike has prevented hundreds of student athletes from competing in playoff state competitions. As a stalemate continues, a Chicago Public Schools spokesman said students rely on their coaches for guidance and it wouldn’t be safe to compete while staff members are on strike. Coaches are making the difficult choice to strike to improve conditions for student-athletes in the long term, unions officials say. “They’ve worked and trained, many of them, year-round for this opportunity … to culminate in a state championship opportunity,” Craig Anderson, the association’s executive director, told CNN.
