Scientists have discovered a ‘monster’ black hole that’s so big it shouldn’t exist

(CNN)Scientists have discovered a “monster black hole” so massive that, in theory, it shouldn’t exist. “Black holes of such mass should not even exist in our galaxy, according to most of the current models of stellar evolution,” said Liu Jifeng, head of the team that made the discovery. “LB-1 is twice as massive as what we thought possible. Now theorists will have to take up the challenge of explaining its formation.” Scientists are now scratching their heads at how LB-1 got so huge. The Chinese team has proposed a number of theories. LB-1’s sheer size suggests that it “was not formed from the collapse of only one star,” the study said — instead, it could potentially be two smaller black …

Could Asia’s passion for tofu help solve the plastic crisis?

(CNN)A staple in the Asian diet, soybeans have been used to make tofu, miso soup and soy milk for hundreds of years. But now, the popular legumes are also being turned into an alternative to plastic wrap. Chen’s technology could help to solve two problems at once: cutting plastic production and reducing the amount of food waste deposited in landfill. “In Singapore, the amount of food waste we generate every year can fill up 15,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools,” he says, adding that because soy products are so popular in Singapore, 30 tons of soybean residue is produced there every day. F&N, a soy-based drinks producer, has partnered with Chen’s lab and provides the residue, straight from the factory. The company …

China’s Mars ambitions one step closer after successful test of lander

Huailai, China (CNN)China has completed its first public test of a Mars lander, keeping the country on track for an unmanned exploration mission to the red planet in 2020. According to officials, the trial was designed to test the lander’s ability to hover and avoid obstacles, as well as monitoring how well it operated in a similar environment to Mars, where the pull of gravity is one-third of the Earth’s gravitational force. China invited diplomats and international media, including CNN, to witness the test. Beijing has pushed for more inclusion in international space projects but the US tightly restricts the ways NASA can work with China’s space program. The Chinese government told the dozens of watching journalists that the test …
