Cervest raises 3.7M for Earth Science AI platform to predict climate effects

Climate risk, including extreme events and the related pressures our environment, are fundamentally affecting the way businesses and governments operate — both tactically and strategically. Increasing climate volatility is causing food supply disruptions and increasing pressure on Enterprises (including financial institutions, insurers and producers) to disclose what’s going on. The trouble is, while there is a lot of data about all this, its complexity, incompleteness and sheer volume is too vast for humans to process with the tools available today. So just as the climate changes, we are faced with “data chaos.” Equally, other parts of the world suffer from data scarcity, making it much harder to provide useful and timely analysis. So the challenge is to address these issues …

Google is training an AI to smell

Google is in the process of teaching an artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize smells based on their chemical structure. In a paper released by the Google Brain Team this week, researchers outlined how they used what is known as agraph neural network, or GNN, to analyze the molecules in certain smells. The researchers enlisted the help of expert perfumers and matched close to 5,000 molecules to specific identifiers such as jasmine or sweet. The team used roughly two-thirds of the molecule dataset to train their neural network and then attempted to see if it could correctly describe the rest. Incredibly, in what appears to be a major breakthrough, the neural network accurately categorized the remaining molecules. Alex Wiltschko, who led …

Inside the Deepfake Arms Race

By late 2018, Ali Bongo, the president of Gabon in West Africa, hadnt appeared in public for many months after reportedly suffering a stroke. So it came as a surprise when a seemingly official video appeared online on New Years Day depicting Bongo, looking a bit disoriented, addressing the Gabonese people. Bongos rivals declared the video to be a deepfakea sophisticated digital forgery. Bongo was dead or incapacitated, the opposition declared. On Jan. 7, army officers wrote in a May essay. A deepfake video, still image, or audio recording is the product of a clever bit of coding called a generative adversarial network, or GAN. A GAN has two components: a discriminator and a generator. The discriminator is trying to …

Google completes controversial takeover of DeepMind Health

Google has completed a controversial take-over of the health division of its UK AI acquisition, DeepMind. The personnel move had been delayed as National Health Service (NHS) trusts considered whether to shift their existing DeepMind contracts — some for a clinical task management app, others involving predictive health AI research — to Google. In a blog post yesterday Dr Dominic King, formerly of DeepMind (and the NHS), now UK site lead at Google Health, confirmed the transfer, writing: “It’s clear that a When we started DeepMind Health 3 years ago it was because we believed good research and smart software could make a difference to patients & nurses & doctors. Proud to be part of this journey. Huge progress delivered already, …

AI services startup Hypergiant brings on Bill Nye as an advisor

Hypergiant, a startup launched last year to address the execution gap in bringing applied AI and machine learning technologies to bear for large companies, has signed on a high-profile new advisor to help out with the new ‘Galactic Systems’ division of its services lineup. Hypergiant founder CEO Ben Lamm also serves as an Advisory Council Member for The Planetary Society, the nonprofit dedicated to space science and exploration advocacy that’s led by Nye who acts as the Society’s CEO. Nye did some voiceover work for the video at the bottom of this post for Hypergiant through the connection, and then decided to come on in a more formal capacity as an official advisor working with the company. He’ll act as …
