Why Are 96,000,000 Black Balls On This Reservoir?

Veritasium took a boat through 96 million black plastic balls on the Los Angeles reservoir to find out why they’re there. The first time he heard about shade balls the claim was they reduce evaporation. But it turns out this isn’t the reason they were introduced. The balls are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) which is less dense than water so they float on the surface of the reservoir even if they break apart. They are 10cm (4 inches) in diameter and contain about 210ml of water. So the main reason they are on the reservoir is to block sunlight from entering the water and triggering a chemical reaction that turns harmless bromide into carcinogenic bromate. This effect occurs …

How to Cook With Weedand a Dash of Tasty, Tasty Science

Mac and cheese. Peanut butter and jelly. Asparagus and … cannabis oil with a citrusy terpene profile? Welcome to food pairings in the heady era of cannabis legalization. A new breed of chef is thriving, experimenting with how to infuse dishes with weed, whose various strains might smell and taste of lemon or mushroom or grain. And, of course, they can complement that taste with the intoxicating experience of THC, like traditional chefs might pair foods with particular wines. It’s all nerdy as hell, and it just so happens that one of the top cannabis chefs in America, Michael Magallanes, is also a chef in WIRED’s San Francisco office. (To be clear, the food he cooks for us is great, …

Bear Gifts Deer Bones To Guard Dog In Exchange Of Being Allowed Access To This Mans Trash

In a series of photos shared by the Ontario resident, he explained that on three separate occasions his “furry idiot son” Brickleberry had accepted bones from a crafty bear in exchange for rummaging through their trash. A dog owner just went viral for a tweet exposing his guard dog accepting ‘bribes’ from a bear JesseNeon Jesse posted that his dog Brickleberry was in fact not a very good guard dog, as he has been letting a bear get away with rummaging through their trash in echange for deer bones. JesseNeon Brickberry or ‘Brick’ can be seen here enjoying his bribe. According to his owner he is a “mastiff/hound mutt with some beagle in him, and is the best boy. He is …

25th Anniversary Of ‘The Crow’ – The Most Cursed Movie Of All Time? – Perez Hilton

Saturday marks the 25th anniversary of The Crow, and we already know what you’re thinking… They released this obvious Halloween staple in freakin’ May?! Photos: Scary Movies You Can Watch Streaming Yep, for some reason the goth horror revenge comic book film came out on May 11, 1994 — in a blockbuster summer with movies like The Flintstones, Forrest Gump, and The Lion King. Um… what? Um, at least it was on home video (shout out to VHS for ’90s kids!) by September? Even still, it was a sleeper hit that more than doubled its budget at the box office and became a genuine cult classic. So obviously scheduling misfires were not the movie mistakes this film would be known for… Sadly, this was …

Trump’s feud with Congress puts American democracy on the brink

Washington (CNN)The constitutional showdown between President Donald Trump and House Democrats is taking a grave new twist that threatens to embroil the nation in a deep political and legal nightmare that could last for years. On Wednesday it also emerged that the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee is deadlocked with the President’s eldest son, Don Jr., who has been subpoenaed to return to the panel to testify. Nadler: Barr won’t testify because he is terrified But while Washington is consumed by the confrontation, polls and anecdotal evidence suggest indifference among many Americans about the momentous goings-on in Washington, which so far are not resonating much outside the capital. A strong economy, extreme political polarization and the daily struggles of millions of …

Scientists Create Next-Generation Plastic That Can Be Recycled Over And Over Again

Plastics are turning up in all the wrong places, from the deepest depths of the ocean to the “pristine” air of the Pyrenees Mountains to even the food we fork into our mouths. It is undeniably a global issue – the world is in need of something more sustainable. Scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory believe they have made such a state-of-the-art plastic capable of being recycled over and over again with no loss to quality. “Most plastics were never made to be recycled,” said lead author Peter Christensen, a postdoctoral researcher at Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Foundry, in a statement. “But we have discovered a new way to assemble plastics that takes recycling into consideration from a molecular perspective.” …

The Obsessive, Tumultuous Lives of SpaceX Rocket Chasers

A few hours before dawn in January 2015, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket departed from a launch pad at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on a mission to the International Space Station. It was the company’s fifth cargo resupply mission and the first time it attempted to land a booster on an autonomous drone ship. Rocket launches always inspire awe, but for Ryan Chylinski, this one was life changing. A part-time photographer, Chylinski had signed up for NASA Social, a program that grants media credentials to unaffiliated writers and photographers. It was his first time photographing a launch up close. “It was addictive,” Chylinski says. “I just kept thinking about it.” He returned to his IT job and spent …

‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ director promises design changes after fan backlash

Sonic games, in the past few years, have been universally acknowledged as not good. They’re notorious for ridiculously confusing plotlines, poorly-rendered, buggy cutscenes, and dialogue so corny it would make an after-school special shudder. It’s a wonder how the legacy of a little blue dude who runs speedily has managed to stay intact this long.  But sometimes you gotta dig in to the cringe to pull out anything of quality. Like a chaos emerald in the rough, a project emerged that would breathe some much-needed life into a franchise dying from lack of self-awareness.   Penny Parker, a voice actress and video producer, is known for her gaming YouTube channel SnapCube, dedicated to Let’s Plays and general uplifting gaming content. …

Stop letting your kids stare at iPads in restaurants, science says

(CNN)I try to be restrained in my judgments of other parents. We have so many obligations and pressures when it comes to parental duties that it’s probably more detrimental to kids if their parents are further stressed by worrying that they’re doing it all wrong. Go Ask Your Dad is parenting advice with a philosophical bent as one dad explores what we want out of life, for ourselves and our children, through useful paradigms and best practices. It considers old problems in new ways, and new problems that previous generations didn’t face. I definitely appreciate the need for breaks from parenting, the desire to have a peaceful meal and adult conversation, and the need to find solutions when kids act …

Jeff Bezos Unveils Blue Origin’s Prototype of a Lunar Lander

When Robert Heinlein wrote his masterpiece of space age realism, The Man Who Sold the Moon, he had no way of knowing how prescient it would be. Published in 1950, it tells the tale of Delos D. Harriman, the “last of the robber barons,” who is hell-bent on being the first man on the moon. Harriman drives himself to the brink of bankruptcy and madness chasing his lunar ambitions, which he feels can’t be left to the bumbling government bureaucracy to handle. At the dawn of the new space race, it feels more relevant than ever. These days, billionaires with their own space programs are in abundant supply—Elon Musk, Paul Allen, Richard Branson, Robert Bigelow. But towering above them all …
