The two groups that reach the peak of human endurance? Extreme athletes and pregnant women

(CNN)In pushing the boundaries of human endurance, extreme athletes and pregnant women are unmatched, a new study says. Longer pushes require lower intensities, but over a short period of time, the human body can successfully exert 4,000 calories on average before hitting the wall. That’s 2.5 times the basal metabolic rate, or amount of calories a body needs to operate while at rest. The average person won’t reach those limits in a typical workout (except maybe Crossfit, Pontzer noted), but pregnant women and extreme athletes cut it close. Weeklong races and nine-month pregnancies similarly push the body to its limits, often burning calories at a rate the body can’t keep up with. Original Article : HERE ; The Ultimate Survival …

Science Says Parents Of Successful Kids Have These 23 Things In Common

Good parents want their kids to stay out of trouble, do well in school, and go on to do awesome things as adults. And while there isn’t a set recipe for raising successful children, psychologists have pointed to several factors that predict success. While it takes a range of practices and techniques to raise a child well-equipped for adulthood, some themes run throughout these tips: spending time with your child, letting your child make decisions, and maintaining a happy family. Much of a child’s development comes down to the parents — having both parents in the same household, in a loving relationship, leads to success in a child’s adult life. Here’s what parents of successful kids have in common: 1. …

Exoplanets Have Been Caught In The Act Of Forming Moons For The First Time

Two independent teams of astronomers have found evidence that a circumplanetary disk surrounds two nearby exoplanets. This is believed to be a fundamental stage in the evolution of gas giant planets that could lead to the formation of moons. Both studies used the incredible capabilities of the Very Large Telescope, although they employed different instruments. The first paper, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, used the SINFONI instrument. The second paper, published in Nature Astronomy, employed the MUSE instrument.  The system is known as PDS 70 and is located 370 light-years from Earth. It is extremely young at only 6 million years old, a bit over a thousandth of the age of our own Solar System. Planet PDS 70 b was discovered last …

Beto O’Rourke Wants To Increase Voter Registration. But Can It Work?

A new plan from Democratic presidential candidate voter registration by 50 million people not registeredchoice that his views on voting rights were shaped by his home state’s dismal voter turnout ranking of 50th before the 2018 election, when he Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). He said the ranking was in part due to constituents being “drawn out” of districts, referencing a that found that legislators had drawn districts discriminatorily based on race or ethnicity.   “If we have in fact drawn people out and gotten to really terrible levels of voter participation, then the answer to that has to be drawing people in,” he said. O’Rourke’s plan would automatically register voters electronically when they “do business with a government office,” a …

Secret Life Of Domestic Cats Revealed By Scientist’s CatCams

Since the miniaturization of cameras, zoologists have been putting them on all sorts of wild animals to track movements and behaviors. Surprisingly, however, Felis catus has been relatively neglected, but this has now been rectified, and the true lifestyle of the domestic cat (when humans are not around) revealed. Dr Maren Huck of the University of Derby told Science Mag the inspiration for putting cameras on cats came because her cat Treacle brought home a merlin as big as herself. Huck wondered if Treacle was a big game hunter, or a scavenger passing off others’ work as her own. Applying a camera to Treacle suggested she was big-noting herself, as she only managed to catch a single woodmouse in six …

Authorities in the Dominican Republic said a preliminary autopsy found that the couple suffered respiratory failure and pulmonary edema, caused by excess lung fluid. Franklin Graham wants the nation to pray for Trump on Sunday. But other Christians call it propaganda

(CNN)While on a preaching tour in Vermont a few weeks ago, Franklin Graham got an idea: God had helped Donald Trump reach the White House, and now the President needed divine aid again. In some respects, the “Pray For Trump” day seems designed to drive positive media coverage of the President, shifting the narrative from a presidency in peril to one buoyed by Trump’s most loyal bloc: white evangelicals. Graham himself has no public events planned on June 2, outside of a prayer he’ll post on Facebook and a television appearance on Fox News. Sunday’s event is a near-perfect embodiment of political evangelicalism in the Age of Trump: It blends Christian nationalism, the idea that the United States has a …

Trumps Latest Attack on Federal Climate Science May Backfire

This story originally appeared on HuffPost and is part of the Climate Desk collaboration. As planet-warming gases reach levels not previously seen in human history, the Trump administration’s bid to restrict how federal scientists conduct the next National Climate Assessment risks delaying urgent action required to curb emissions and climate change. But the administration effort could also backfire, becoming yet another loss for a president whose deregulatory efforts struggle to meet basic legal standards while hardening the resolve of career government researchers trying to uphold the scientific method. Last fall the White House released the second volume of the Fourth National Climate Assessment, a 13-agency analysis of peer-reviewed climate science required by Congress at least every four years. The release …
